Go: Fitness’ Member Testimonials Posted

Some of you might know, about two weeks ago, we put the camera up in Go: Fitness, and let people talk about their experiences at our training center.

So, we want to announce that some of these testimonials are now posted. You can click the link or visit Go: Fitness’ web site, and click on the “About US & Solutions for You” and scroll down to Member Testimonials.

It was very nice to hear over and over that people like the training, and like the family feeling we have worked hard to create.

By the way, these are not short little “Love the gym!” testimonials. These are actual people and their thoughts and experiences, so the testimonials are 2 to 3 minutes long per person. I don’t want you to think I am scaring you off from watching them. I actually want you to think there is something to watch. (who really wants the short “you guys are great” and then on to the next person testimonial.)

I encourage you to watch one, every other day for a week, and see if there is any story that might help you or a friend of yours!

We will be shooting Go: Sports sometime in the next 2 weeks! So, watch out for the email announcement!

Thanks!

Wow, My Last Strongman Contest

Well, I finally threw my last strongman contest, and I am relieved and sad!

It has been a great run and I think there are/were only one or two promoters that have been throwing contests longer than I have in the United States. And I have been one of the longest run State Chairman, winning “State Chairman of the Year” once.

Why did I like the sport so much? It was the camaraderie. The bonding that developed from guys being guys for 4-8 hours on a Saturday. The friendships that were born by 5-20 guys in one weight class killing themselves at a contest to give it all, and cheering each person on to do their best. Doing it together.

After that, it was proved that proper training could win titles and prevent injuries. Yes, winning North America’s Strongest Man twice (yep, the only person to do that!) was pretty cool. People still don’t believe that the training I did, or the other guys from Columbus, @ Built Solid, or what Phil Pfister did was real. We all had to have done something else. I have had 3 athletes I have coached compete at World’s, 2 of them finished on the podium, one of the wining.

Now I see Strength Coaches throwing Strongman events into their training of their athletes, and I gasp sometimes. Why?  Because they are not teaching fundamental movement skills, and Injuring their athletes just to do something cool. The proper form of flipping a tire gets great results, but I would guess 1 out of 10 coaches actually train it right. We don’t use it in my Sports Performance facility because the risk to benefit ratio is out of whack. Strongman used wrong, will wreck the body, so we don’t use it just because it is cool.

So, I will continue to support the natural athletes in the sport, help the promoters and the organizations that promote strongman. But I am better off to promote proper lifting technique and program design. Opening eyes and changing the concepts of effective training.

Help for Parents and Athletes

A few of my fellow coaches got together for a phone conversation this week. It seems like we all have heard the same thing the last few weeks from parents and athletes.

“I can’t come in because I am going to ‘open gym’ (or some variant)”

I hope I can make this as clear as possible. “Open gyms” and “open fields” don’t really help athletes improve. The main reason is that the coaches are not allowed to really coach proper movement patterns because of state laws. The don’t have the time to coach up the second stringers, or the non-stars, because they either get it while playing or they don’t.

If you want your athletes to improve, at any level, the need consistent coaching on lifting, speed, agility and coordination development. With two or three hours a week of this coaching, and the open gym, your athlete can really see improvement in the off season!
